Enjoy a warm golden glow from this popular and reliable evergreen hedging plant, Ligustrum ovalifolium ‘Aureum’, also known as Golden Privet. The elegant variegated gold-edged leaves provide fresh, bright colour to the garden all year round, as well as a dense, effective screen, creating privacy and helping to reduce noise pollution from roads. This easy to grow, unfussy variety is perfect for use as hedging in formal and informal gardens, tolerating full sun as well as deep shade. It’s low maintenance and simple to keep manicured with regular clipping during the summer months. Supplied as 30 - 50cm bareroots (12 - 20") Height: 4m (13'). Spread: 4m (13'). Planting Distance: 30cm (12"). (4 plants per metre for a single line hedge). Grow Privet in any well-drained soil in sun or partial shade. Plants will tolerate a range of soils, from sand to chalk and clay, and areas of pollution. Plant bare root hedging as soon as possible after delivery. Before planting, incorporate well-rotted manure into the planting area. Dig a hole deep enough to fit length of the roots and position one plant in each hole, then firm back down. For hedgerow planting, position the plants 45cm apart. Water-in thoroughly after planting and keep well watered until established. In areas where rabbits can be a problem, it’s worthwhile to place rabbit guards on your plants. Clip hedging plants regularly to encourage them to bush out. Ligustrum can be grown as a free-standing shrub or trained as a hedge. Free-standing shrubs require minimal pruning; remove any dead, damaged or diseased growth in spring. Trim hedges in May and August. After pruning, mulch plants with 5cm (2") of well-rotted compost or manure around base of the plants.
