Product Description :

Green Beech (Fagus sylvatica) is a classic hedging plant, producing a dense, bushy screen which can be easily clipped and kept in shape. Versatile and easy to grow to the shape and height required, it’s ideal for any garden boundary where it will provide an effective screen for privacy as well as filtering noise pollution from nearby roads and a great habitat for wildlife. Beech is a semi-evergreen variety, keeping most of its leaves throughout winter after they have turned brown before producing a full covering of fresh new foliage the following spring. Supplied as 50 - 80 cm bareroots (20 - 31"). Height: 12m (39'). Spread: 8m (26'). Planting distance: 30cm (12"). (4 plants per metre for a single line hedge). Plant beech hedging in fertile, well drained soil. Fagus hedging is suitable for positions in full sun or partial shade. Plants will tolerate a wide range of soils, from sand to chalk and clay, and areas of pollution. Plant bare root hedging as soon as possible after delivery. Before planting, incorporate plenty of well-rotted manure into the planting area. Dig a hole deep enough to fit the length of the roots and position one plant in each hole, then firm back down. For hedgerow planting, position the plants around 45cm apart. Water-in thoroughly after planting and keep well watered until established. In areas where rabbits can be a problem, it’s worthwhile to place rabbit guards on your plants. Clip your hedging plants regularly to encourage them to bush out. Water regularly until established. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost along the base of the hedge to provide winter protection when young. Beech should be clipped to shape in summer to encourage dense, bushy growth.
