Easy to grow and reliable Privet has long been a popular choice for hedging, providing an effective dense screen of lush green leaves for privacy and also filtering noise pollution. On top of that, it provides a good habitat for wild birds. Easy to clip and keep in shape, the soft green foliage can be trimmed into neat, boxy formal hedges or shaped into more informal, natural curves. Unfussy Privet (Ligustrum ovalifolium) is ideal for any size of garden, planted in sun or deep shade. Supplied as 60 - 90 cm bare roots (24 - 35") Height: 4m (13'). Spread: 4m (13'). Planting distance: 30cm (12"). (4 plants per metre for a single line hedge). Grow Privet in any well-drained soil in sun or partial shade. Plants will tolerate a wide range of soils, from sand to chalk and clay, and areas of pollution. Plant bare root hedging as soon as possible after delivery. Before planting, incorporate plenty of well-rotted manure into the planting area. Dig a hole deep enough to fit the length of the roots and position one plant in each hole, then firm back down. For hedgerow planting, position the plants around 45cm apart. Water-in thoroughly after planting and keep well watered until established. In areas where rabbits can be a problem, it’s worthwhile to place rabbit guards on your plants. Clip your hedging plants regularly to encourage them to bush out. Ligustrum can be grown as a free-standing shrub or trained as a hedge. Free-standing shrubs will require minimal pruning; simply removed any dead, damaged or diseased growth each spring. Trim hedges in May and again in August. After pruning, mulch plants with 5cm (2") of well-rotted compost or manure around the base of the plants.
