Grow something deliciously different with Kalettes! This novel new cross between Kale and Brussels Sprouts species produces 'rosettes' of loose, frilly-edged buttons on a long stalk, with purple, green and bicoloured leaves. With a flavour and nutritional content similar to spring greens, Kalettes are a great choice for those who don't enjoy the strong taste of sprouts! A superbly hardy vegetable, standing in good condition throughout the winter. The loose buttons are easy to pick off the stems and are perfect for adding to stir fries or serve steamed or microwaved – they make very nutritious winter greens.Pot up plug plants and grow them on in warm, frost free conditions until plants are well grown and all risk of frost has passed. Gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 - 10 days before planting Kalettes plants outdoors in firm, rich fertile, well-drained soil in full sun. Prepare the soil in advance in early spring by adding plenty of well-rotted farmyard manure to the soil to improve its structure and fertility. Plant brassicas at a distance of 60cm (24") apart and cover with a protective netting or fleece to prevent attack from birds and insects. Water the plants thoroughly after planting.Companion planting: try growing Brassicas with Nasturtiums to draw cabbage white butterflies away from your crop, and mint to help deter flea beetles.Product Specifications:.
