Lush, glossy evergreen foliage provide a dense covering all year round, making Prunus lusitanica (Portugal Laurel) an excellent candidate for a boundary hedge. Fast growing and potentially large when fully established, this RHS AGM variety can be also grown as a free-standing shrub to provide privacy or screen parts of the garden. Suitable for most gardens, it’s unfussy about conditions and easy to prune to the shape and size required. During spring you can look forward to a pretty show of white flower racemes which throw out a pleasant fragrance. Grow Portugal Laurel plants in sun or shade, in any moderately fertile, reliably moist, well drained soil. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil. Plant Prunus shrubs at the same depth as they were planted in their pots. Backfill the planting hole and water well to settle the soil. When planting a Portugal Laurel hedge, position the individual plants at a distance of 75cm (2’,6") apart. Water regularly throughout the growing season until young plants are fully established. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant. Once established, Prunus plants require only occasional attention, removing any damaged stems and lightly trimming those that spoil the shape of the plant in summer after flowering. If grown as a hedge, Portugal Laurel can be trimmed from early to mid spring, and tolerates hard pruning when necessary.
