A dense, evergreen shrub, Thompson & Morgan Cherry Laurel ‘Etna’ is a popular hedging plant for almost any part of the garden, including shady areas, north-facing borders and coastal gardens. Smart, glossy and dense, its shiny leaves form a lovely backdrop for the creamy white flowers spikes in spring, which are highly attractive to pollinating insects. As flowers fade, glossy berries take their place in autumn, providing a valuable source of food for birds. Choose a position in sun or shade when growing Thompson & Morgan Cherry Laurel ‘Etna’ and plant in any moderately fertile, reliably moist, well-drained soil. Incorporate plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compos to the soil prior to planning, and position the shrub at the same depth as it was planted in its pot. Backfill the planting hole and water well to settle the soil. When planting as a hedge, position the individual plants at a distance of 75cm apart. Water Thompson & Morgan Cherry Laurel ‘Etna’ regularly throughout the growing season until fully established. Apply a mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant in spring. Once established, prunus plants require little attention aside from removing any damaged stems and lightly trimming those that spoil the shape of the plant after flowering. If grown as a hedge, Cherry Laurel can be trimmed from early to mid-spring, and tolerates hard pruning when necessary. Caution: harmful if eaten.
