Thompson & Morgan Physocarpus ‘Diabolo’ is a modern, contemporary-looking shrub that is mostly grown for its rich, copper-red, architectural foliage. During early summer, clusters of dainty white flowers with a hint of pink appear almost by surprise, giving a fabulous contrast to the dark foliage. Flowers are followed by seed heads that persist well into autumn. A stunning addition to the shrub border, Thompson & Morgan Physocarpus ‘Diablo’ looks particularly good when partnered with a range of other colourful shrubs such as Berberis, Elaeagnus and Euonymus. Choose a position in full sun or semi-shade when growing Thompson & Morgan Physocarpus ‘Diabolo’ and plant in fertile, well-drained soil. Physocarpus prefer acid to neutral soils, but will tolerate more alkaline soils. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of organic matter such as well-rotted manure or garden compost. Water Thompson & Morgan Physocarpus ‘Diabolo’ regularly throughout the growing season until young plants are fully established. Cut back the flowered shoots to a healthy pair of buds after flowering, unless seed heads are required for late season interest. Physocarpus tolerate fairly hard pruning and can be cut back by half every few years to maintain a smaller size.
