Small and compact in size with a dense, bushy shape, low maintenance Deutzia gracilis ‘Nikko’ is worth a space in any garden, large or small. This RHS AGM variety is unfussy and easy to grow. What’s more, it provides a long season of interest starting in late spring with a profusion of sweetly-scented white flowers along its branches, then a dense covering of lush green leaves through summer, followed by an illumination of rich autumn foliage colour when the leaves turn reddish purple. Grow Deutzia in any moist, fertile, well drained soil in full sun. Feed and water Deutzia plants regularly until fully established. Once established, Deutzia shrubs will require little attention. After flowering, cut back the flowered shoots to a pair of healthy buds. On mature plants, remove a fifth of the oldest shoots from the base of the plant. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure or other organic matter around the base of the plant after pruning.
