Rhubarb ‘Timperley Early’ is regarded as the earliest maturing variety and is the perfect choice for forcing to produce delicious pink stems as early as February. Alternatively, it can also be grown unforced in the usual way. Given an Award of Garden Merit by the RHS, this variety provides a moderate crop of pink stems streaked with attractive apple green shades. You should resist the temptation to harvest the stems in the first year as the plant needs time to become properly established. In the second year, stems can be harvested between April and June as long as the stems are at least 30cm (12”) and the leaves have fully unfurled.To harvest rhubarb, gently pull each stalk from the base of the stem and twist them away from the crown. You should only ever harvest a few stems at a time as taking too much will damage the plant’s vigor. Harvesting should be completed by the end of July to ensure the plant has enough time to build up energy reserves for next year’s crop. Excess stems can be frozen to enjoy later in the year. Be careful as only the stems of the rhubarb plant are edible; the leaves contain oxalic acid which is toxic if consumed.Position: sun or semi-shade. Height: up to 60cm(24in).
