Blueberry ‘Spartan’ is a deciduous hardy shrub that will certainly make an impression in any garden with summer crops appearing in the mid to late season. The delectably large blue-black berries will beautifully decorate the luscious green bushy foliage, with the added bonus of small heavenly white spring flowers that attract pollinating insects! Amongst other blueberry plants, ‘Spartan’ is a self- fertile variety where the pollination can be improved by growing with another variety, increasing the quantity and reliability of the crop. During the autumnal period, the small leaves will turn to blazing shades of rich red and warm orange, complimenting containers and boarders!Blueberries require a well-drained, acid soil in a sunny or semi shaded position. In areas where acid soil does not naturally occur, grow blueberry plants in patio containers using a mix of ericaceous compost and John Innes No. 3. If possible, blueberries should be watered with rainwater because the lime contained in tap water will reduce the acidity in the soil over time. Blueberries will begin to produce fruit in their third year. As fruits begin to develop, cover the plants with netting to protect the berries from birds.
