Thompson & Morgan Hardy Azalea 'Silvester' makes for a charming evergreen Azalea, perfect for brightening up patio containers and makes a good specimen plant for the front of acid borders, woodland gardens and rockeries. This compact shrub forms a dense, compact mound of glossy green foliage and from May is smothered with small, funnel-shaped pink blooms, each with a darker rosy-red throat. When growing Thompson & Morgan Hardy Azalea 'Silvester' choose a position in moist, well drained, acid soil that has been enriched with plenty of well-rotted organic matter. For optimum results, choose a position in semi or dappled shade with shelter from cold drying winds. Many dwarf Azalea can cope with a sunny position provided that the soil remains reliably moist. Where soil conditions are alkaline, Azalea plants are best grown in patio containers, using a mix of ericaceous compost and a soil-based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Azalea are surface rooting, so it is important to avoid planting them too deeply. Water regularly throughout the growing season, and where possible, use rainwater as the lime contained in tap water will reduce the acidity in the soil over time. Feed in spring with a slow release fertiliser for acid-loving plants. Protect plants from cold winter winds. Border grown Azalea will appreciate an autumn mulch to protect their shallow roots from winter cold. Take care not to mound the mulch too close to the stem as this may cause it to rot. If necessary, lightly prune Azalea plants in June to remove damaged shoots and restrict size.
