Thompson & Morgan Rhubarb ‘Raspberry Red’ bears thick, deep red stalks with a superb sweet flavour. This vigorous autumn planting rhubarb. produce high quality, tender stems of Rhubarb and can be harvested early in the season, without the need for forcing. Thompson & Morgan Rhubarb ‘Raspberry Red’ is delicious in pies and crumbles! These budded pieces, taken from established crowns, will quickly mature resulting in crowns big enough to harvest from 2 years after planting. Plant Thompson & Morgan Rhubarb ‘Raspberry Red’ in a sunny position in well drained soil from autumn to spring. Prepare the soil in advance by digging in plenty of well-rotted manure and clearing all weeds. When planting rhubarb crowns, set them so that the top of the crown sits 3cm (1") below soil level and allow a spacing of 75cm (30") between plants. Alternatively plant them in large containers of soil based compost such as John Innes No 3. mixed with plenty of rotted manure. In order to allow the plant to become properly established, during the first year, resist the temptation to harvest the stems. In spring, remove the emerging flower heads as they appear. From the second year, stems can be harvested from April to June, when the leaves have fully unfurled. Harvest only a few stems at a time by pulling from the base of each stem and twisting away from the crown. Water rhubarb plants in summer during dry periods to prevent the soil from drying out. When the leaves die back in autumn, remove the old stalks and apply a mulch of well-rotted manure around the crown. Caution: The leaves of rhubarb plants are toxic if eaten.
