Campsis ‘Madame Galen’, also known as trumpet vine, is an unusual, fast-growing and vigorous climber ideal for growing on sturdy supports, like pergolas or garden arches in a sunny part of the garden. It’s also great for screening walls and fences if grown on strong trellis. The bushy foliage provides a long season of colour, cover and shade, while in late summer the plant produces bold clusters of wonderful, exotic-looking, large red trumpet blooms. This impressive climbing plant is sure to bring an exotic feel to the garden, whilst being fully hardy and relatively faff-free. Once established, these plants thrive on neglect, so they’re perfect for any busy gardener! You can grow Campsis in borders or large containers on the patio. Although Campsis are fully hardy, they will perform better when grown against a warm, sunny wall for added protection and better flowering performance. Plant into moist, but well-drained soil in a sunny position. Alternatively, grow Campsis plants in patio containers using soil-based compost such as John Innes No.2, and add extra grit for drainage. Once Trumpet Vine plants are established in the border, they will prove to be drought resistant. After planting your Campsis, cut back all stems to 15cm (6") from the ground, to stimulate new growth. Train the strongest new shoots and remove weaker shoots. After 2 or 3 years, a framework will be established, and you should prune back sideshoots to within 2 or 3 shoots of the main stems.
