A fascinating carnivorous plants to enjoy indoors! Nepenthes ‘Blood Red’ has especially eye-catching pitchers, which are bi-coloured red and pale green. Native to tropical rainforests, pitcher plants are a botanical curiosity and make an unusual feature for a hanging planter indoors. The pitchers hang from tendrils growing from the leaf tips and are full of digestive juices. Plants feed by attracting insects with sweet-smelling nectar within the lid of the pitcher. The insects then lose their footing on its slippery lips, tumbling into the pool of digestive juices below. Also known as ‘monkey cups’, it was once thought that monkeys drank from them! Grow Nepenthes in bright light, with around 6 hours of full sun per day. A bright, sunny windowsill is ideal. They require a frost-free position such as a cool conservatory, porch, or bright room indoors with a temperature of 15C (60F)-32C (90F). Nepenthes will need moist (but not soggy) soil. This is best achieved by regular watering. Nepenthes are fairly tolerant to tap water, but it’s best to use rainwater or distilled water, as carnivorous plants are particularly sensitive to the chemicals contained in tap water.
