Hydrangea paniculata ‘Hercules’ makes an incredible display during the summer months, not only are the cone-like flower clusters huge but they’re incredibly long lasting too, standing the test of all kinds of weather conditions. Thriving in sun or partial shade, this is the ideal low-maintenance shrub to provide a refreshing highlight to any part of the garden. If you like growing you own cut flowers, you’ll love having your own supply of these huge stems to hand! Hydrangea paniculata prefers a sunny or semi shaded position, with shelter from cold, drying winds. Grow hydrangea plants in any non alkaline, fertile, moist soil. Improve the soil prior to planting by adding with plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost, ensuring that it is mixed in thoroughly and deeply. Water regularly until plants are fully established. Leave the faded hydrangea flower heads in place until the new buds swell in spring to protect the delicate buds from frost damage. Prune after flowering, reducing the stems to restrict their growth to the available space and to improve the shape of the plant. If necessary, Hydrangea paniculata will tolerate hard pruning of the oldest stems to a few buds from ground level. This will also encourage larger flower heads to be produced. After pruning hydrangeas, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost around the base of the plant. Caution: irritant to skin and eyes, harmful if eaten.
