This dwarf hybrid is extremely compact - ideal for even the smallest gardens! Rhododendron fastigiatum 'Blue Steel' bears deep purple flowers in April above its dark evergreen foliage. The leathery leaves of this dwarf hybrid are particularly attractive with a silvery-blue sheen to their upper surface. Awarded an RHS AGM for its garden performance, it makes an excellent feature plant in containers, rock gardens or planted in groups at the front of acid borders. Height: 45cm (18"). Where soil conditions are alkaline, Rhododendron plants are best grown in patio containers, using a mix of ericaceous compost and a soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Rhododendrons are surface rooting so it is important to avoid planting them too deeply. Water Rhododendron plants regularly throughout the growing season. Where possible, use rainwater as the lime contained in tap water will reduce the acidity in the soil over time. Feed Rhododendrons in spring with a slow release fertiliser for acid-loving plants. Protect plants from cold winter winds. Border grown Rhododendrons will appreciate an autumn mulch to protect their shallow roots from winter cold. Take care not to mound the mulch too close to the stem as this may cause it to rot. If necessary, lightly prune Rhododendron plants in June to remove damaged shoots and restrict size.
