Rhododendron 'Marilee’ forms a well branched, rounded shrub that remains cloaked in evergreen foliage throughout the year. The dark, bronze-green leaves make a fine contrast with its red, funnel shaped flowers during late spring. Part of the popular evergreen Azalea group, this reliable variety makes a superb specimen shrub for acid borders and containers. Height and spread: 50cm (18"). Choose a position in semi or dappled shade with shelter from cold drying winds. Many dwarf Rhododendrons can cope with a sunny position provided that the soil remains reliably moist. Where soil conditions are alkaline, Rhododendron plants are best grown in patio containers, using a mix of ericaceous compost and a soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Rhododendrons are surface rooting so it is important to avoid planting them too deeply. Water Rhododendron plants regularly throughout the growing season. Where possible, use rainwater as the lime contained in tap water will reduce the acidity in the soil over time. Feed Rhododendrons in spring with a slow release fertiliser for acid-loving plants. Take care not to mound the mulch too close to the stem as this may cause it to rot. If necessary, lightly prune Rhododendron plants in June to remove damaged shoots and restrict size.
