The new fronds of Dryopteris wallichiana ‘Jurassic Gold’ unfurl in a dusky bronze-pink colour in spring, before changing to a striking orange-tinged yellow, all set above a lush bed of mature green foliage to make an eye catching contrast. This low maintenance hardy plant is ideal for growing in a dappled shade area or as part of a woodland-style planting scheme, making a robust, colourful and effective ground cover. For those with shaded patios, this fern will also thrive in a large patio container, providing a long season of colour and remaining evergreen in sheltered areas. Plant Dryopteris in a sheltered spot. Choose a position in dappled shade on fertile, moist, acid or neutral, soil. Dryopteris ferns prefer a soil that is rich in organic matter so add some well rotted manure or garden compost to the soil prior to planting. Feed and water ferns regularly until they are fully established. Apply mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost around the crown of each plant in spring.
