Thompson & Morgan Calycanthus are handsome, hardy shrubs that certainly deserve to be more widely grown. Glossy, deciduous foliage covers the gently arching branches, creating a lovely backdrop for the exotic, magnolia-like blooms. This duo brings together two particularly fine varieties, both with a lovey, sweet fragrance. Commonly known as Sweetspice, these unusual shrubs are ideal for woodland edges and lightly shaded borders. Calycanthus Duo comprises: Thompson & Morgan Calycanthus x raulstonii ‘Hartlage Wine’ - A rare but delightful, multi-stemmed shrub with upright to arching branches, bearing lustrous green, oval leaves and rich, burgundy blooms. Height and spread: 4m (13’) Thompson & Morgan Calycanthus ‘Venus’ - Produces extremely fragrant, magnolia-like flowers with white strap-like petals in May. Height: 1.8m (6’). Spread: 1.5m (5’) Acclimatise Calycanthus plants to outdoor conditions for a period of 7 to 10 days prior to planting in their final positions. Grow Calycanthus in borders, in moist, fertile, well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. Choose a position in full sun. Water regularly until plants are fully established. Feed and water throughout the growing season while young plants become established. Once established, prune Calycanthus in early spring as the buds begin to swell. Cut back all stems to a low permanent framework, 3 or 4 buds from the base of the plant. After pruning, apply a mulch of well-rotted manure or compost around the base of the plant. Culinary note: Produces an edible and delicious spice. Snip off twigs and allow them to dry out in the sun or a low oven, then crush the bark and use like cinnamon.
