Spruce up a shaded spot with this striking perennial fern, Athyrium niponicum ‘Burgundy Lace’. Red feathery fronds uncurl in spring, gradually maturing throughout the season to develop powdery white leaves set onto jet black fronds with a subtle pink midrib. They’re the perfect plant to bring a interest to a damp or dark part of the garden, which is ideal if you have a north-facing space with lower light levels. It’s also a brilliant contrast option for adding contrast to a ferny planting scheme, tucked in to stony, mossy or woodland areas. With a compact size, this variety is ideal for edging pathways or for planting at the front of borders. Once established, it’s very low maintenance and can be left mainly to its own devices. Plant Athyrium in sheltered, dappled shade in fertile, moist, acid or neutral, soil. Athyrium ferns prefer a soil that is rich in organic matter so add some well rotted manure or garden compost to the soil prior to planting. Japanese painted ferns require a reliably moist or boggy soil. Grow them in bog gardens or in the damp soil at the edge of ponds. Feed and water ferns regularly until they are fully established. Apply mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost around the crown of each plant in spring.
