This hardy shrub is cloaked in dark green, glossy, sharply toothed leaves which are paler underneath - the spiky architectural foliage makes 'Hivernant' an excellent deterrent plant for a security hedge. This lovely looking, low-maintenance shrub makes an excellent evergreen, specimen shrub for larger gardens or for a mixed shrub border. Perfect for woodland gardens too, Mahonia prefer a shady site but will tolerate sun if the soil does not dry out. Height and spread: 2.5m (8').
