A handsome RHS AGM variety bearing clusters of slender flower spikes. A superb hardy shrub for those tricky shaded spots will brighten even the darkest corner of the garden bringing colour and a sweet fragrance to the garden during the cold winter months. As the flowers fade they are replaced by bunches of purple berries, and the holly shaped, evergreen leaves make a handsome feature all year round. Commonly named Oregon Grapes is perfect for adding year round interest to the garden and encouraging bees and other pollinating insects. Grow in borders or containers in any rich fertile, well drained soil in full sun or semi shade. Although Mahonia plants are hardy they will appreciate a sheltered position away from cold, drying winds. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil. Feed and water regularly throughout the growing season until plants become established. Little pruning required but may benefit from a trim in spring, once the winter berries have fallen, to remove any damaged or diseased stems and lightly shape the plant. Culinary note: The ripe fruits are too acidic to eat raw but can be stewed with sugar or other fruits and made into jelly or pies. They are used to help the milder flavour of some fruits or to make a lemonade-like drink. Young leaves are simmered in water and eaten as a snack.
