Hakonechloa macra ‘Aureola’ is a stunning outdoor variety, producing striped green and yellow swards which are then tinged red in autumn, creating a colourful display in your garden. This attractive grass is neat and clump-forming and will perform well in sun or shade, making it a versatile addition to any outside space. It is an ideal choice for those wanting to create a Japanese style area and it combines well for autumn containers or for planting in gravel gardens. Arching flower panicles are borne in late summer and autumn. This hardy perennial has been awarded a prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit. Hakonechloa is easy to grow and performs best in moist, well-drained soil in a sun or partial shade position. Each winter, old flowered stems should be cut back and dead foliage should be removed to the base of the plant. Cut stems can either be left in the border as natural mulch or alternatively they can be composted. Hakonechloa is a notoriously slow growing plant, so it will require patience.
