Add winter interest to your front door or patio with this attractive standard holly tree - the ideal, traditional plant for displaying just as Christmas is approaching, as well as for providing year-round structure and greenery in the garden. Holly (Ilex) ‘Blue Maid’ is a female variety, producing tiny white flowers in spring which, when pollinated, are followed by a profusion of vibrant red winter berries. These scarlet fruits contrast wonderfully with the deep purplish-green foliage, and while it looks its best in winter time, it’s a useful and attractive tree throughout the rest of the year too maintaining its bushy, rounded shape. Unlike many hollies, this one has almost spineless leaves which won’t prickle you or your visitors as you pass. This low-maintenance plant is a wonderful addition to the patio or for flanking the front door. Supplied as a two-year-old plant in a 3 litre pot with an average height of 75cm Feed and water container-grown plants regularly. As plants increase in size they will require repotting into increasingly larger pots. Prune Holly standards to shape while the plants are young. Prune in summer, removing any damaged stems and trimming the head of the standard to a spherical shape. In autumn, apply a mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost to the base of border grown plants. Avoid mounding mulch up around the stem as this may cause it to rot.
