A popular hedging variety for wildlife lovers and foragers, producing an impressive show of white blossom in spring which attracts pollinators, followed by blue-black berries which are loved by wild birds. These berries can also be picked and used to make sloe gin. This thorny variety forms a dense hedge which adds an extra level of security as well as privacy to your garden boundaries. Perfect for informal gardens, it’s easy to grow in most conditions, tolerating sun or shade and is easy to keep to the shape and size required with regular pruning or clipping. Supplied as 60 - 90cm bareroots (24 - 35") Height: 4m (13'). Spread: 4m (13'). Planting Distance: 25cm (10"). (4 plants per metre for a single line hedge).Plant Blackthorn in any moist, fertile, well-drained soil. Ideally grown in full sun. Plant bare root hedging as soon as possible after delivery. Before planting, incorporate plenty of well-rotted manure into the planting area. Dig a hole deep enough to fit the length of the roots and position one plant in each hole, then firm back down. For hedgerow planting, position the plants around 45cm apart. Water-in thoroughly after planting and keep well watered until established. In areas where rabbits can be a problem, it’s worthwhile to place rabbit guards on your plants. Clip hedging plants to encourage them to bush out.Water regularly until fully established. Blackthorn require little aftercare. Remove any diseased, damaged or crossing shoots to maintain a healthy framework. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost around the base of the plants in spring, taking care not to mound mulch up against the stems. Blackthorn should be clipped to shape after flowering to encourage dense, bushy growth.
