Also known as the Blue Bean Shrub, or slightly more gruesomely as ‘Dead Man’s Fingers’, once established it produces a crop of edible blue bean-like fruits, of which the flesh inside is considered a delicacy in various parts of the world. In spring, the shrub treats you to a profusion of large bell-shaped green flowers which cover the branches in clusters and have a sweet fragrance in the evening. Relatively fast growing and with the potential to reach a fair size, this is a good shrub for the corner of the garden, to act as a boundary screen or as a standalone feature. Plant Decaisnea fargesii in moist but well drained, fertile soil in full sun or partial shade. Water well until established, the Blue Bean Shrub will not grow well in dry conditions.
