Spring hasn’t truly arrived until you see Forsythia in bloom. From early March onwards, the slender stems of this ever popular deciduous shrub are smothered in bright yellow bell-shaped flowers. Once these have faded away, Thompson & Morgan Forsythia x intermedia ‘Week-End’ will happily become part of a hedge or shrub border. These plants can also be used in containers to brighten up your patio! Grow Forsythia plants in moist, well-drained soil in full sun or semi-shade. Feed and water regularly until fully established. Container grown plants will require annual dressing with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser and regular watering throughout the summer months. Border grown plants will require less attention. After flowering has finished in late spring, prune Forsythia by cutting back all flowered shoots to a healthy pair of leaves. On established Forsythia plants, cut back up to a fifth of the oldest shoots to their base, to encourage healthy new growth and improve flowering. Apply a mulch of well-rotted manure or other organic matter around the base of the plant after pruning. Culinary note: The blossoms are edible raw, though they can be slightly bitter. They will add colour to salads and are a cherry garnish.
