Prune it regularly to achieve a dense compact shrub of beautiful blueish-silver foliage, or leave it unpruned and allow it to reach its full size of up to 25m. It’s a great specimen for any garden, large or small, producing unusual rounded leaves which will add contrasting tones to your garden throughout the year. Low-maintenace, non-fussy and easy to grow, this resilient variety will tolerate all kinds of tough conditions, including coastal, dry or exposed sites as well as a more sheltered location. Even the bark of this tree provides added ornamental appeal, flaking and peeling to reveal rusty, coppery colours. A florists’ favourite, the soft young branches of Eucalyptus gunnii are also useful for creating stunning cut-flower arrangements. Plant eucalyptus trees into any fertile, non alkaline, free draining soil that does not dry out. Choose a position in full sun with shelter from cold winds. Feed and water eucalyptus trees regularly until fully established. Once established, eucalyptus trees are reasonably drought tolerant and will require less attention. Unless it is intended as a specimen tree, Eucalyptus will need regular pruning in early spring to restrict its vigorous growth. Cut back all stems to 3 buds above soil level or to a permanent low framework.
