A fantastic shrub for year-round interest, Arbutus unedo boasts various highlights through the seasons. Starting in spring with bright red-tinged young foliage which sets an impressive contrast against the dark green mature leaves. From mid-summer, sprays of highly scented and nectar rich white urn-shaped flowers cascade from its branches alongside the ripening fruit from the previous year. The rounded, yellow and red stoneless fruits ripen towards late summer and have an unusual look but they are edible, their yellow flesh has a plum flavour. This evergreen shrub is a great focal point in the garden and will happily grow in most sunny, sheltered sites. Often seen pruned into a small tree which is particularly well suited to front gardens or smaller spaces. Repot Strawberry Trees into larger pots using a soil based compost such as John Innes No 3, and grow on in cool conditions until large enough to be planted in its final position. When Arbutus is well grown, transplant into any non alkaline, fertile, moist but free draining soil. Incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or compost into the soil prior to planting. Choose a position in full sun with shelter from cold winds. Although perfectly hardy once mature, Arbutus plants will appreciate a layer of fleece for winter protection when young. Feed and water Strawberry Trees regularly until fully established. Once established, Arbutus trees require little attention except for the occasional removal of damaged, diseased and misplaced shoots in winter or spring.
