A remarkable tree prized for its vibrant autumn foliage and attractive drop-shaped habit, Liquidambar styraciflua, also known as sweet gum, is an excellent choice for larger gardens. From spring through to the end of summer the tree has a dense covering of vivid green leaves similar to that of a maple. As autumn approaches Liquidambar appears to melt from top to bottom in molten shades of red, purple, orange and yellow - it really is quite a spectacle! Lime tolerant, it’s particularly useful in gardens with chalky soils. Unusual spiky berries form during the summer months providing additional interest.
