Amaranthus, commonly known as ‘Love Lies Bleeding,’ are interesting and exotic looking annuals grown for their showy panicles. A spectacular tall plant for a sunny border, which will form a centrepiece in your seasonal displays. The small crimson-purple flowers form tassel-like panicles, which appear to drip from the plant’s branches. Much prized by flower-arrangers, the blooms last well after being cut and can be added to fresh or dried arrangements. Sow February to March in pots or trays of moist seed compost and cover with a very fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Keep at a constant temperature of between 20-25C (68-77F). During germination, allow the temperature to reduce at night. This will occur naturally if using a heated propagator is avoided. After sowing, do not exclude light as this helps germination. Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged; germination will usually take 3-15 days. When large enough to handle, transplant seedlings into 7.5cm (3in) pots or trays. Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days before planting out after all risk of frost, 30cm (12in) apart. For best results, provide any ordinary, well-drained soil in full sun.
