Product Description :

Portrait of Canterbury is a photographic journey through the city of Canterbury and the glorious countryside that surrounds it. Well-known photographer Andreas Byrne travels through beautiful Kentish villages, castles, windmills, marshes and white weather-boarded houses and the ancient woodland of Blean which is the most extensive in the south. The city of Canterbury offers unrivalled views, from the modern Marlowe Theatre to the ancientWestgate Towers. It has an intriguing maze of narrow cobbled streets dotted with medieval timbered buildings, some at very strange angles! The River Stour runs through the city reflecting buildings and bridges as it flows. But it is the cathedral that dominates the city and all the history that goes with it, particularly the murder of Thomas Becket in 1170. The cathedral has welcomed pilgrims from all over the world and there is a walk in Kent known as the PilgrimsWay that leads to Canterbury from London. Its stunning architecture glows golden in the low evening sunlight whilst inside the giant columns and arches, the functional and yet beautiful bones that support the great weight of the central tower, are astounding to behold. When sunlight pours through the delicate medieval stained glass windows they light up in blues and reds and are a continuing inspiration at the heart of a building, city and landscape that has uplifted residents and visitors alike for centuries. Andreas Byrne is a professional landscape photographer based in New Barn, North West Kent. Following publication of his first book, Moods of Kent, Andreas embarked on this photographic journey to Canterbury and its environs making many pilgrimages to the city in order to capture the essence and spirituality of the area.
