Product Description :

It runs and runs and runs... For over 60 years, the Beetle has been rolling on all roads around the world. His story began in 1931, when Ferdinand Porsche's design office had already developed a streamlined saloon. After neither Zuendapp nor NSU could decide for a production, Porsche was commissioned to develop a "Volkswagen". Mercedes was commissioned to build a first series of 30 samples. Only many years later it became known that Porsche was not the only spiritual father of the beetle, because already in 1925 Béla Barényi dealt with a bully car with air-cooled boxer engine installed in the rear. Hans Ledwinka also constructed a very similar prototype for the Czech Tatra works – both copyrights were only recognized many years later and compensated with high compensation by VW. In view of the positive assessment of the beetle, the government decided to set up a Volkswagen plant, and thus the origin of the city of Wolfsburg actually dates back to the car manufacturer VW, which was founded in 1938. Initially, there were only a few smaller villages in the more agricultural area in the east of Lower Saxony. With the foundation of the plant, the city – the KdF car (power by joy) in Fallersleben – soon grew to 100,000 inhabitants, and those who hear Wolfsburg today automatically think of Volkswagen. The few cars built until the end of the war, however, went only to a few privileged and not to the general population. During the war, only military vehicles were built. After the war, 85 percent of the plant, located just a few kilometers from the Soviet occupation zone, was destroyed. The English crew did not know that WAS was to start the Volkswagen project. Therefore, in autumn 1945, three Ford England engineers first visited the plant in Wolfsburg and drove a VW on a road dotted with potholes. Despite the praise of military compatriots who hailed Volkswagen as a wonderful vehicle, they nevertheless came to a negative verdict. Tests by the automotive industry on two vehicles that were brought to England in late 1946 were also negative. In the end, Henry Ford II was offered at a symbol price of only one dollar. But even there, the CEO rejected the project, because the British Rootes Group gave it a negative rating with the words "the project would not be worth a Heller"! Thus, a GmbH belonging to a Treuhand company, which in turn was under the occupation power at the beginning, was founded. Later, this Treuhand company transferred to the newly founded Federal Republic of Germany (West) and passed on the supervision to the new federal state of Lower Saxony. Finally, Ivan Hirst, officer of the British control commission and commissioner manager of Volkswagen GmbH, was looking for a technical manager for the plant he found in Heinz Nordhoff. Although at first a commission of experts from the Allies (after a failed handover to Ford) had not certified the beetle an economic future, after handing over to the company Heinz Nordhoff the assembly line began to run again in 1945 - still relatively slowly at the beginning. However, this condition should change soon. Nordhoff made a success from Volkswagen, and in the following years production numbers went steadily steep. At the end of 1946, more than 10,000 cars left the factory. In order to satisfy the taste of foreign customers, a more elaborate "export model" was presented in July 1949 in addition to the standard model. The outer appearance was distinguished by a high gloss finish and rich chrome plating from the standard models. From March 1953, an oval window without a vertical bridge replaced the "pretzel window". On August 5, 1955, the one-millionth beetle rolled off the band and symbolized the economic upturn in the country. The "Made in Germany", which was originally conceived as a stigma, became a seal of quality, so the "Beetle" became a huge success, especially in the United States. The production peak was reached on February 17, 1972.
