This half size card provides 1 industry standard 9 pin RS232 serial COM port in a single PCI slot. As PCI is fully Plug and Play compatible the operating system or BIOS automatically configures the card ensuring conflict free installation. Low-Profile PCI is a new PCI card standard for space-constrained system designs. The new form factors maintain the same electricals, protocols, PC signals and software drivers as standard PCI v2.2 expansion cards. They are also mechanically similar; however, Low-Profile PCI is an additional form factor that defines a shorter raw card and new mounting bracket for card retention. The Low-Profile PCI definition is an engineering change notice (ECN) to the conventional PCI specification, Revision 2.2.

The UC-235 uses Brainboxes new industry leading UART BB16PCI958 and supports both 3.3V / 5V standards. Increasingly, modern PCs are coming with 3.3V PCI slots. The change from 5V to 3.3V signalling on the PCI bus is a result of the technical advances made by leading PC manufacturers such as Dell, HP and IBM to increase system speed while reducing onboard PC power consumption. What this means is that many new PC systems no longer use 5V signalling on the PCI bus, and 5V-only PCI cards cannot be used in these PCs.
