The Golden Lion Hotel stands majestically on Senhouse Street at the top of Shipping Brow in Maryport overlooking the harbour and Solway Firth over to Scotland.

The Hotel stands on the site of Ellenfoot House the first house in Maryport and the residence of the Lord of the Manor Humphrey Senhouse the 1st (1694-1738).

In 1747 Humphrey Senhouse the 2nd discussed with his wife and friends the possibility of developing Ellenfoot and two years later on the 31st January 1747 he renamed the town Maryport after his wife Mary.

The hotel is rich in the town s history and has been visited by many famous people including royalty. Fletcher Christian who led the mutiny on the bounty in 1789 often visited his relatives at the nearby Ewanrigg Hall.

William Wordsworth was here in 1829. George Stephenson renowned as the Father of Railways and of Rocket fame stayed in the hotel in 1836 attending a meeting the outcome of which was the Maryport & Carlisle railway.

Wilkie Collins and Charles Dickens also stayed in the hotel in 1857 Wilkie Collins laid the scene of his famous novel The Women in White based on a local ghost story.
