Dating back to the 18th century the Elephant and Castle Inn is a traditional Yorkshire local in the heart of Holmfirth. With a friendly welcoming atmosphere it provides the perfect local from which to explore Holmfirth with its quaint secluded cobbled passages maze of alleyways and narrow lanes. It also hosts a variety of music sessions during the ever popular Holmfirth Folk Festival each May.
Holmfirth itself is the location for the filming of the evergreen TV series Last of the Summer Wine and the Elephant and Castle is a stones throw from Nora Batty s house and other tourist favourites. Holmfirth is surrounded by beautiful countryside and the Elephant and Castle provides an ideal centre from which to explore the moors and hills.
The Inn is steeped in history surviving the devastating floods of 1944 that swamped the entire area and providing solace for the survivors whilst the area dried out. On the front door you ll find an engraved brass plate indicating the height of the 1944 flood.
The Elephant and Castle is also tied to the origins of the famous Holmfirth Harriers who held their meeting there back in October of 1907. Mentioned no less than 6 times in the Good Pub Guide over the years the Elephant and Castle provides homely good value and comfortable accommodation for visitors. All rooms are en-suite with central heating
