First published in England by Griffith and Farran in 1871, this edition is not a translation at all but a complete re-write of the novel, with portions added and omitted, and names changed. A better translation is A Journey into the Interior of the Earth translated by Rev. F. A. Malleson.

Product description

Review

Fantasised a parallel world to ours under the earth's crust. This hypothesis was both popular and subscribed to, even by reputable scientists, in the 19th century. Verne's tale [...] remains the best of its (scientifically) preposterous kind. --John Sutherland, Guardian

Journey to the Centre of the Earth is one of the most famous novels ever written. Verne has left us an extraordinary book, which has withstood the test of time better than some of the science described within it. It has brought delight to generations of readers, and will for many more. There is nothing so rare as the chance to take an impossible journey, and to believe it so powerfully that we wonder if we will make it out alive. That's magic. And that's Verne's gift. --Michael Crichton, Daily Telegraph

Verne's imagination has given us some of the greatest adventure stories of all time. --Daily Mail

From the Back Cover

Jules Verne's A Journey to the Center of the Earth is a masterpiece of adventure. Accompanied by nephew Harry and guide Hans, Professor Von Hardwigg follows a coded message left by a 16th-century alchemist into a subterranean world that is home to marvels from the prehistoric past.

This is a superb edition of a classic. It is well constructed and you can feel the quality. Me and my daughter are reading this as her bedtime story and she loves it. If you want a good quality value for money edition then this is the one to buy.

It’s a great read no matter how old you are, I’ve read this ages 12 and ages 34 it’s just a good book exciting and sparks the imagination, the cover is more child friendly not as nice as the penguin classic hard backs

Beautiful book, however I gave it 3 points as the main characters' names were changed from the original Jules Verne's book: Professor Otto Lidenbrock was changed to Professor Hardwigg and Axel has become Harry. What is with this obsession of making everything English? What is wrong with being German (or other European in general?)

Beautiful book, a lot smaller than expected but perfect to carry around if you like reading whilst travelling like myself. Great, captivating story!

Beyond the amazing story of “A Journey to the Cener of the Earth” the book itself feels really nice in your hands. From the stunning visuals the cover and the beautiful golden borders on each page within the book to the golden trim on each page making the good looking like gold when closed up and displayed. To close, if you want one of Jules Verne’s classic novels in a magnificent modern classic style with easy to see print and is a must if your looking for a gorgeous book to display.
