2.0 out of 5 stars Did not perform to my expectations

This is a review of the Extech MA260 True RMS 200A AC Open Jaw Clamp Meter.

The Extech MA260 seemed like a good idea but unfortunately, it fell far short of my expectations.

I'm doing a condo renovation. Much of the drywall is up but I needed to find where electric had been run and was hoping this meter's non-contact voltage detector would be up to the task of indicating where power lines were located underneath the drywall. The performance of this meter was not adequate. It rarely was able to indicate where live voltage was and I had to resort to other means to get the job done.

As for the jaw feature, it too did not impress me. As I was probing my electric panel, I found the probe unreliable.

In my frustration I did not spend any more time with the meter as it failed in the two areas I needed it to work.

3.0 out of 5 stars Can't get the "Open Jaw" to work

I was very excited to get this meter but I'm not having success with using it in the open jaw configuration. As you can see in the photo, I've tried to get a measurement using it this way multiple times and the only thing I get is the light turning on telling me that there is current there, but the reading always shows "0". I have also used the leads to use in a socket and that works perfectly every time. It's still useful to me, but not as useful as I was hoping. The instructions seem pretty clear and obvious, and I'm following them to the letter, so if there's something I'm doing incorrect, I don't know what it is.

If you have any questions, just ask in the comments and I'll do my best to respond promptly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice meter, but casual users can get by spending much less

I am not an electrician, and am evaluating this meter from a handyman/homeowner perspective. It does all the basic functions I would need as a homeowner - AC voltage, DC voltage, continuity and resistance, with a couple added features of AC current, non-contact voltage detection and a diode tester. If I were working on power panels often, I think this would come in handy as there are no dials or buttons to fiddle with - you just put the probes on the circuit or around a wire and it detects whatever you are looking for.

Just a couple nitpicks that I have to mention. One is that the probe tips are very short, so I could not get them far enough into a wall outlet to measure voltage. And you would think the non-contact voltage detector would at least light up when you get close to a live outlet or switch, but no. It did light up when trying measure current on an appliance cord that was turned on, but the current itself was not high enough to register on the meter. The minimum is 1.5AAC, which apparently the appliance was drawing less than that.

Now that said, this is a good meter, but is this meter appropriate for occasional homeowner use, especially at its price point? I think you could find something just as useful for much less. For example, Harbor Freight frequently has sales on their little multimeter for $2.99, and it will be fine for most casual use. If you like this Extech brand, you could spend a bit less for their Extech MA160 True RMS 200A AC/DC Open Jaw Clamp Meter. For about 1/4 the cost, these multimeters would also fit the bill and have good ratings: Multimeter, Tacklife CM01A Clamp Meter 4000 Counts Auto-Ranging Digital Tester with NCV, AC/DC Voltage, Current, Ohm, Continuity Electrical Tester, Diode, Resistance,Capacitance Meters and Etekcity MSR-C600 Digital Clamp Meter Multimeters, Auto-Ranging Multimeter AC/DC voltmeter with Voltage, AC Current, Amp, Volt, Ohm, Diode and Resistance Test Tester.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Auto-Ranging Feature; Easy To Use
Reviewed in the United States on 19 October 2018
Amazon Vine Customer Review of Free Product( What's this? )
    Pros-

Simple to use and great to have nearby for quick testing purposes. Easily measures voltages, current, etc. Good piece to keep in the vehicle for when the need arises AND it works equally well on AC and DC.

Good for the household handy-person or the pro as a quick trouble-shooting reference tool.

Auto-ranging feature makes it simple for almost anyone to get accurate results. Auto-ranging was valuable when we discovered that someone had changed the settings on a generator, and it was producing 480 volts where the reading should have been 120.

Insulated probes are a plus, and the removable insulators make it easy to check outlets.

Data-hold is nice for situations where you're working alone and have to note values.

Compact current probe jaw design makes it easy to reach tight spots. When troubleshooting in a commercial, 3-phase generator transfer panel, we were able to work even where the lines were tightly packed.

Backlight is valuable working in dimly-lit surroundings.

    Cons-

Could use a carrying bag to keep everything together and protected.

Non-contact voltage detector feature doesn't always work. Seems to be more reliable when you're working near live wiring rather than on the consumer side of an outlet.

4.0 out of 5 stars As a meter it works great
Reviewed in the United States on 28 August 2018

As a meter it works great, just plug in the leads, turn it on and it automatically detects between DC and AC. It also features the open jaw for "quick current measurements" which also works holding it up to an electrical outlet - sometimes. It could be user error but I don't know how you can measure that. Basically all you are supposed to do is hold it up at the outlet and it should tell you whether it is hot or not with a little red light. But it didn't always work. So it's not something I would rely on if I was going to open the outlet box and work on it.

But as a meter is works great and is very easy to use.
