- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 December 2013The second half of the 20th century has led to a pretty drastic social revolution, which while often positive, led to certain aspects of gender roles no longer being passed down, as in the past. The book aims to redress this - when it comes to some basic skills and attitudes that define manliness from the authors' point of view. While this may sound chauvinist, it is most certainly nothing of the kind; the authors simply believe that in many cases the baby was thrown out with the bathwater and that many modern men never fully transition into adulthood, like they should.
The book covers various aspects, from dress and grooming, leadership, courtship and appropriate manners in treating the opposite gender, raising children, financial independence, etc. A lot of it has to do with taking appropriate care and attention and embracing, rather than shirking one's responsibilities. The book will teach those still not so enlightened, how to tie a tie properly, how to defend oneself (or a lady's honour), how to make a fire while camping, or how to deliver a baby in an emergency, as well as a myriad of other skills.
And while the reading of the book per se is unlikely to suffice, taking on the advertised attitude and practicing it, will probably lead to the desired results.
Even though the book is a mixture of a how to guide and of rules the authors believe should be followed (if one wants to call oneself a man), it never comes across as overly preachy or mechanical - the language flows well and you can just as easily read it from cover to cover, as just delve into a particular subject / use it as a reference.
For quite some readers lots of advice contained in the book is not (wholly) new but I would venture that every 18 year old - and many older males - would truly benefit from spending some time with the book and pondering the advice contained therein.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 May 2014I found reading this book incredibly enjoyable.
Of course lots of the advice it gives is straightforward and just confirms what common sense already tells you to do. However, the book gives a great overview of what modern manhood entails. It also allows you to become a better man by comparing your actual behaviour in different situations to how you ideally should behave.
The book might sometimes be a bit overly old fashioned and very American, but that doesn't make it any less helpful at all. I also found the fighting techniques described in the book quite entertaining - obviously you won't be able to win an unprovoked pub fight if all your preparation was reading books!
All in all, the book is entertaining to read and allows you to identify and work towards eliminating potential weaknesses. A good read for any man interested in continuous self-improvement and personal development.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 November 2011Extremely useful reference for learning all the things Boomers rejected, thus never being passed on to us Gen-Xers and Millennials. The sections on shaving and barbers was a revelation! Advice on simple manners that just aren't taught anymore (which is sad) is also enlightening. However, I think it's a little too old fashioned when it comes to dress and styles. Clothing evolves and changes. For example, wearing pants at navel level. Sorry but I don't want to look like an old man with my pants pulled up to just below my nipples. Also, the advice for hats is always take them off indoors. I don't think that is very practical at a grocery or other places one might shop. Additionally, very few restaurants provide coat/hat racks and hooks now days (which is actually sloppy and annoying, I don't like having to hang my coat off the back of my cair). Sometimes you simply have to wear your hat indoors because there is nowhere else to put it. It's also difficult to tip your hat to the lady at the checkout when you're being rushed through and they are staring at the floor. All that said, it's as useful for drawing attention to the deficit of civility in our post millennial world as it is a reference for being a gentleman.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 May 2019Bought this for the husband as a gift who never read it. I thought its a great gift and has loads of bits and bats about men. The shaving section is superb!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 March 2014This book is great. Growing up without a father I had nobody to teach me the Art of Manliness and through this book I can now teach my sons. Just like the book say you can skip bits and go to bit more important to you and it's like start from the start. It's one book but of many books.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 May 2014Bought this for my teenage son. The book is full of good advice on all sorts of relevant situations a man may face and offers advice on dealing with those situations. Issues such as how to dress and prepare for interviews, etiquette and even how to tie knots! Very good.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 March 2013This book covers all topics. Some of the items are common knowledge but others are just good to know. I like wearing mens hats, especially the old fashioned hats, there is a good chapter on hats for people who havent got a clue like me. recommd it for all.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 September 2015The book of the website.
The website is definitely worth a look and contains much of the book's content, plus a lot more; ie podcasts, articles, videos etc.
For me, the chapter on appearance, dress and health/hygiene could have been more detailed, but its a good start and influenced me to ditch my old cartridge razor in favour of a DE razor.
The author is from the States so the content is not aimed at this side of the pond, but much does translate to British sensibilities.
