Henri Cartier-Bresson/Scrapbook: Photographs 1932-1946 Hardcover – 8 Dec. 2006

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 48 ratings

In 1946 Cartier-Bresson travelled to New York with about 300 prints in his suitcase, bought a scrapbook , glued each one in and brought that album to MoMA’s curators. Here, published for the first time in its entirety, is a facsimile of that famous scrapbook.

Henri Cartier-Bresson (August 22, 1908 - August 3, 2004) is perhaps the greatest photographer of the twentieth century. In a career spanning over sixty years, he has used his camera as an impassive and neutral third eye to capture the vagaries of human behaviour and to produce some of the most memorable and compelling photographs ever published.

great production job worthy of HCB.

In 1946 having presumed Henri Cartier-Bresson dead, a posthumous exhibition of his work was prepared in New York. Henri, upon finding out this amusing mistake, arrived in New york with a scrapbook containing 300 of his favourite images. He presented this to the gallery as a suggestion for his retrospective exhibition. The above gives insight into why, despite it being difficult to show anything new about such a celebrated photographer, this book is still unique.

Thames Hudson along with the Foundation Cartier-Bresson, have lovingly restored this facsimile of Henri Cartier-Bresson's famous scrapbook down to the smallest detail. The result is a fresh and new look at Cartier-Bresson

This huge beautifully bound volume gives a unique insight into what Cartier-Bresson himself thought was his best work. It also shows the context in which he chose to put it. Additonal information is provided by a wonderfully written forward by Martine Franck an introduction by Agnes Sire and an essay by Michel Frizot

In summary this book is a thing of beauty and a wonderful glimpse into the world of one of photography's true greats. It's also a book I fully expect to visit again and again. If you are an afficionado of Bresson you will still find this book a valuable addition to your library. If you have never been introduced to Henri Cartier-Bresson then this book will knock your socks off.

I bought this as a gift for someone else but wanted to keep it! I loved the binding that made it appear as though it was an old fashioned leather bound book. It contains a fair amount of text as compared to some other Cartier-Bresson books but is all v interesting. I liked the story that the book was allegedly produced when a US gallery requested to put on a post-humous retrospective of C-B's work (he wasn't dead). He was apparently so amused/incensed that he put together a scrapbook for them and wrote assuring them he was alive but they were welcome to do the exhibition anyway. May be true who knows!

What a great buy. This was a Christmas present for my mum, who's a mad keen photographer and loves the Magnum Photographers. This scrap book is HUGE, it should be called a scrap tome! Its pages are gorgeous and glossy, the cover looks the business and everything within it is arranged beautifully, with plenty of fascinating reading for those interested in doing more than just look at the pictures. An excellent, informative and attractive book. If you or anyone you know is serious about photography, buy this.

A masterpiece, but you need to be very interested in Cartier Bresson to not just leave it lying around on the coffee table...A beautiful gift for passionate photographers

Very interesting book, because it shows the "alternative" shots out of which the brilliant HCB chose "The one"..Certainly a must have complementary companion for those who want to go beyond the "decisive moment". Well printed.

Every review on this site led me to buy this book to see Cartier-Bresson's amazing photos.

Imagine my disappointment to find this beautifully bound is is only a research tool for someone who wants to know what he did every day and what he wrote in his diary. It is not a display of his best work as I wanted to improve my photography.

There are loads of images of the same subjects repeated with an arm or leg maybe moved inches forward..How boring.

I have opened the book sent the cardboard for recycling so to return it would be a pain.

If you want to see his famous photos, definitely avoid this book as you will be very disappointed.

3.0 out of 5 stars A nice coffee table book, but the content didn't match my expectations.

The quality of the binding and the print is excellent, and the stories are very good, but I had expected great quality photos too, and they are not in there. They are merely snapshots that anyone could've taken. I'm sure many people will see those pics as interesting or valuable, but if I want to see simple snapshots, I can open any of my own albums :-) as the pics in there are a lot better. So, the book is kind of a small disappointment, I must admit.

Definitely a must have book full of interesting informations to better understand the first photo years of HCB until 1946, before the creation of the Magnum Agency.
