Solid Price to performance X99 CPU for multi threaded applications.

Solid Price to performance X99 CPU for multi threaded applications.
The 6800k, the direct replacement for the Haswell-E 5820k X99 CPU. This 6 core monster is ideally suited for tasks such as rendering, video editing etc, basically applications which can utilize the additional cores / threads over the 6700k / 6600k and various other mainstream Skylake CPU’s. Now that's not to say it can be used for tasks such as gaming, because it can, and keeps up with the 6700k once given an overclock.Few things to note with this CPU, unlike mainstream CPUs (aside from the 6600k / 6700k) does not come with a CPU cooler. I recommend getting a high quality aftermarket cooler if you plan to overclock this chip far. Next some X99 motherboards have been out for a while. Most of the older ones released with Haswell-E do have BIOS updates available to support Broadwell-E, however double check to ensure the board you're buying comes with one of these new BIOS’s or is one of the recently refreshed boards that was released to coincide with Broadwell-E and would obviously come with the BIOS out the box. We are using the ASUS Strix X99 (a lovely board ) for this purpose so a non-issue.This particular CPU is similar to the 6850k aside from a slightly different clock speed with its 6 cores and 12 threads. The biggest difference is the number of PCIe lanes. This CPU comes armed with 28 PCIe lanes while the rest of the family come with 40 PCIe lanes. This may sound like a bad thing, but 28 lanes is sufficient I expect for most people's combinations of devices. You could run 3 x Nvidia GPU’s in SLI with a 950 Pro, or SLI GPU’s with a pair of 950 Pro’s in raid and so on.In terms of performance this CPU is a beast for multithreaded applications, we were getting a Cinebench score of 1197 at stock clocks with a pair of Trident Z ram @ 3200 Mhz 14-14-14-35 speed. Overclocked to 4.4 Ghz this went up to 1385. Overclocking the cache (uncore) from stock to 3.7 Ghz nudged us over the 1400 mark. Our video rendering work with blender was reducing project render time by roughly 40% over the 4790k system the build replaced. For overclocking we ran the system at 4.4 Ghz rock solid stable @ 1.31 volts. Now at this stage we could have technically pushed more voltage through the CPU but the CPU gets very warm during stress testing, even with a Kraken X61. If you're really looking to push more voltage through to achieve higher clocks, I would look at a custom loop to be honest. At stock however this CPU remains very cool as the corresponding voltage is also low, it was rarely breaking 50 degrees during stress testing aside from a few peaks. For gaming this CPU is also beastly, however at 1440p, we were more often than not GPU bound anyways. Also if your looking solely for gaming the 6700k / 6600k are also great CPU’s as not many games currently leverage the extra cores and would rather utilize the 6700k’s higher IPC and core frequency (out of the box).In a nutshell the CPU is pretty amazing performer for the applications we want to use. It OC’s well, has great multi threaded performance and the price is respectable before moving up the X99 scale at which point the price rapidly rises. If you're into overclocking and willing to learn then this chip becomes an even bigger powerhouse. However I would say take a peek at the 5820k also. It sounds slightly odd, but while this chip has a IPC performance, I have found the 5820k typically overclock higher, so it closes the delta somewhat, combined with a cheaper price may make it a solid options also.

Working great so far, no issues. Great for gaming and cpu intensive work. People say 6 cores are not worth it for games, but more and more games (such as battlefield 1) are starting to use more than 4 cores so this is a good buy. The single core perfermance is worse than a 6700k for example but not so much enferior that it will hinder game performance. Managed to overclock it to 4GHz using a bequiet pure rock cooler with a somewhat aggressive fan curve set and it doesn't go above 63C under full load. You can easily achieve a higher overclock with a better cooler. Not all that much to say as it is just a cpu and I don't want to go into great depth. You can find much more info on youtube reviews if needed, but if your buying this cpu, it is quite likely that you know everything you need to know anyway :P

Been gaming on it for nearly 2 years now and have absolutely no problem. Would definitely recommend this over the 6850k. Just pair it with something as powerful. I've got a 1080ti & them both on a water loop. This meant i could get
a stable overclock of 4GHz! Great CPU

Not sure the higher price is worth it for gaming, but used in conjunction with DDR4 memory and SSDs in a music production workstation, this has reduced recording and virtual instrument latency to unnoticeable levels even at high (1024) ASIO buffer sizes - very happy with it.

2 years and still going strong. Cooling it iwht a corsair H100i v2 so this thing is freezing half the time.

The issue is, this is a bad overclockingf CPU (regret this now and maybe should've gone with previous generation) but still a good one. I built my PC for the purpose of gaming and workstation (video editting, rendering, 3D modelling) and it handles everything with ease.

Overclocking, sadly, I couldn't get above 4.2 Ghz and voltage was too high for my liking. But reduced it to 4Ghz, which isn't awful as it's still fast enough to handle almost everything i can throw at it. But faster is always better. I cool it with a corsair h100i v2 and even with 1.3v pumped through, i keep this thing around 60c while under 100% load during hour long stress tests.

This is quite outdated as the newer CPU look like they blow this out of the water, but fair review is deserved.

Bought this for video editing to replace a 4-core i7.
I've overclocked by 17% but even so it runs much cooler than the older one.
The 6-cores reduce rendering times, being nearly 2.5 times quicker than my older 4-core.

I've knocked a star off because of the Intel price - just too expensive.
Having said that, Amazons price was by far the lowest at the time I bought it.

A voir.
