Call the Dead Again Paperback – 13 Aug. 1998
Purchase options and add-ons
Penhallow is constantly toing and froing from the Continent, but that night, unusually, he is at home, and - with his son away and his wife Carla in bed with a migraine - alone. Which is unfortunate, for the next morning he is found murdered in the garden.
To the vicarious delight of the locals, who are quick to recall old disputes, Penhallow's death results in some spectacular revelations about his double life - developments which make the murder investigation all the more delicate for Superintendent Markby, who knew the dead man as a young body. Andrew Penhallow certainly had ghosts in his past - has one come back to claim him?

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 March 2023This case was a good one. A girl hitching a lift, but everyone who sees her thinks something bad is going to happen. However, when the murder does happen, she's the first suspect, then there's motive....the girl had no reason to want him dead, so who else would? ...
Read the book and find out. It's a good book, as usual. Meredith and Markby have some time to themselves, to have a dinner date at his sister's. It's not brilliant, brilliant. But good book.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 June 2016I'm a great fan of this author, but I confess I was a little disappointed with this one. I thought early on that I knew where the story was going, but thought something unexpected would happen to change it. Sadly it didn't. Bill Wallis was an excellent narrator. I shall be looking for more of his work.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 May 2016Meredith Mitchell takes pity on a hitchhiker just outside Bamford but there is something about the young woman which makes her uneasy. She drops her at the gates of Tudor Lodge, the home of Brussels based Lawyer, Andrew Penhallow and his TV celebrity wife, Carla. When Andrew is found murdered in his garden the next morning by his distraught wife, Meredith immediately remembers the hitchhiker.
I worked out who the murderer was quite quickly and what the murder weapon was but it didn't spoil my enjoyment of the story. I thought the book was well plotted in spite of this and there are plenty of clues. I think there are maybe not enough suspects but it was still interesting seeing how the evidence is pieced together by Superintendent Alan Markby and his team.
If you like your crime novels low key with interesting characters and backgrounds then this series might be worth a try. The novels are best read in the order in which they were written because of the development of the relationship between the main characters.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 May 2014Not having read any of the series, I gave this one a try and thoroughly enjoyed it - so mant twists and turns! Have now downloaded others to take with me on my holidays and am having trouble not reading them before I go
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 November 2012Apart from:
1. knowing 'who done it' from about three chapters in (or was it two?)
2. a formulaic plot (yes, I know, probably an unfair comment, it's one reason we buy 'who done its' isn't it?)
3. a sense that the author was going through the motions and not putting any effort into it (bills to pay I expect)...
This was just about okay.
I've read a fair few of this series over the years, and there really was a sludgy feel to this book; it actually took me several tries to get through the first few pages. I wonder if Ms Granger is going off her main characters and really couldn't be fagged to put a bit more zip into her prose?

5.0 out of 5 stars A reliably good yarn.
Ann Granger can be counted on to provide a good story, with believable characters and a sound plot. Although similar in some ways they always manage to be different enough to be gripping, with a realistic criminal nailed at the end. I wish she would write faster

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Mystery
Ann Granger is an excellent mystery writer. I especially love her Meredith and Markby series. I have read them all twice. She has finished this series. Her others are not nearly as good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Five Stars
This author reminds me of Agatha Christie and I love this series.
