Sister Fidelma and her companion Brother Eadulf are on their way to visit the new Archbishop of Canterbury, when their ship is blown off course and they land on the coast of the Welsh kingdom of Dyfed. They are given hospitality by King Gwlyddien and Abbot Tryffin of the Abbey of Dewi Sant, and are asked if they would help to solve the mystery of how the entire monastic community of the Abbey, including the King's eldest son, could vanish into thin air. It's not long before the trail leads to deaths and treachery in high places and Fidelma and Eadulf are faced with a sinister and baffling puzzle.

OUR LADY OF DARKNESS:
'Strong on historical whodunnit, as sharp as a sword and as colourful as any medieval manuscript' Northern Echo
'The latest Sister Fidelma mystery is one of the best... an excellent mystery with rich helpings of evil and tension set within a culture struggling to keep its identity and laws in the face of pressure from the Roman Church. Peter Tremayne paints a believable picture of time and place with a set of lively and varied characters' Historical Novels Review

Praise for previous novels:
'The Sister Fidelma books give the readers a rattling good yarn. But more than that, they bring vividly and viscerally to life the fascinating lost world of the Celtic Irish. I put down The Spider's Web with a sense of satisfaction at a good story well told, but also speculating on what modern life might have been like had that civilisation survived' Ronan Bennett
'A heroine whom many readers will willingly follow' Kirkus Reviews;
'A brilliant and beguiling heroine. Immensely appealing, difficult to put down' PUBLISHERS' WEEKLY;

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 September 2022Sister Fidelma and brother Eadulf travelling to Wales where they get embroiled in a twisted murder mystery. Vanished monks, a murdered maiden and rumours of bandits and war keeping them running for their lives. It takes all their wits to figure out who is behind it all and how many murdered are running around. Fun to read and challenging to guess the outcome.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 January 2014Being a history lover and a book worm I find the Sister Fidelma mysteries satisfy my constant search for something interesting to read, whilst informing me of Ireland's history with regard to the Ancient Brehon Law of the Feinechus,(Gaelic). The text of these laws, written in the most archaic form of the Gaelic language, dates back to the 7th and 8th centuries and is so difficult to translate that the official renderings are to some extent conjectural. The ancient Irish judge, or Brehon, was an arbitrator, umpire, and expounder of the law, rather than a judge in the modern sense. Peter Tremayne has obviously deciphered these ancient text's and created the character of Fidelma of Cashel to bring them to life. She may be a little too haughty and pedantic at times, but it all makes for light hearted and entertaining reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really exciting read - even for the second time!
It's the second time, that I have read it - as I have started over again, and it was just as exciting as the first time - if not more! But I also have an advantage, because my short term memory isn't the best, so I can't remember who the culprits are in the books. ;) But even if I could remember, I would still read them again and again, because I absolutely LOVE the Sister Fidelma Mysteries! And I find the old celtic times, the law system and social structures really fascinating.
I recommend them anyone, who have the slightest interest in history and the old celtic times, because you can learn a lot - if you want to, and be entertained the whole way, as there is a lot of accurate historical facts in them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Fidelma yarn
A bit of a convoluted plot, but true to the Fidelma/Eadulf genre. Lots of surprises, good resolution at the end

5.0 out of 5 stars
