Mrs D is Going Within: How a Frantic, Sugar-Bingeing, Internet-Loving, Recovering-Alcoholic Housewife Found Her Zen Paperback – 1 Mar. 2018

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 211 ratings

Despite outward appearances three years after getting sober Lotta is struggling to deal with life in the raw. It's becoming abundantly clear what people mean when they say putting down the drink is just the beginning.

Truth is Lotta's lifelong heavy-drinking habit has left her as a fledgling emotionally. She's slowly accepting that she needs to do some more work on herself. But what? Please don't say it has to involve turning into a hippy. Can't she just comfort herself with another chocolate muffin, distract herself on Instagram, and hope for the best? It would appear not.

In Mrs D Is Going Within Lotta outlines the practices she developed and strategies she worked on to start establishing herself as an emotionally robust woman.

Product description

About the Author

Lotta Dann drank alcohol steadily and heavily from the age of 15 to the age of 39. She stopped drinking only when her habit had reduced her to a sloppy, miserable mess and it became awfully apparent she had no control over her intake. She wrote her way sober with the help of an anonymous blog called 'Mrs. D Is Going Without', which started out small but slowly turned into something incredibly popular and powerful. Her bestselling memoir Mrs. D Is Going Without was published 3 years after she stopped drinking. Since its release Lotta has spent her days parenting and running a busy household, promoting recovery through her blogs and social media accounts, and managing the Living Sober website.

I have been in a path to mindfulness and meditation for a few years now, and this book is so relatable to me (and I would guess humans in general) it has kick started my passion to heal myself again, and not to force it or beat myself up with a stick if I don't do it to the letter, the writing style is honest and easy to absorb, me and 2 friends recently did a weekend walking the lovley west highland way, and I did a huge part mindful. What an experience!!! Mindfulness brings back the peace of mind I am alway searching for, a huge Thankyou lotta for sharing your journey, I can't begin to tell you how both your books have helped me on my journey. A big heartfelt thankyou. Wishing you future success in helping other humans realize their own truth and peace of mind. 🧡

Another fully enjoyable read. Gives the reader plenty to think about ad well as how to achieve those goals. She really writes in a way I can connect with.

I loved Mrs D is Going Without. This follow-up is much less based on her recovery from alcohol specifically, in fact she hardly mentions it. Using fewer references to her blog, this book delves into the hurdles and frustrations of trying mindfulness, yoga, and other things for her 'toolbox' of coping with the rollercoaster of life without alcohol.
I find her really honest, if not slightly predictable - I can't do it, oh wait, yes I can. But it's light hearted and explains some of the concepts really well. I have learned more about my own journey from reading this book, and think she paints a really honest picture of the more hidden side of recovery, after all the dust has settled, and she's over the alcohol, but life still has challenges - learning to deal with them is a really interesting and less talked about challenge Kudos to her for exploring this, and for not catastrophising and over-dramatising her journey. Just good honest stuff.

I'm on Chapter 18 of this book (Kindle version) where Mrs D is being honest about the struggles she had, in part, in writing it. Well, she need not have worried! I have gained so much from this book, all the way through I've been highlighting bits and emailing them to myself, it's just really helped me in so many ways. I've been practising compassion, being in the present moment, 'Three things', acceptance, understanding what my thoughts really are/are not... honestly, the concepts in this book are life changing! If you are at all interested in Mindfulness, buy it! Nice work Mrs D!

I loved the honesty in this book. I laughed and cried. Having recently quit alcohol (loved her first book), being a working mum and of a similar age, everything Mrs D writes really speaks to me. I’ve been ‘going within’ myself for years now, but certainly no expert, I learned SO much.

A bit haphazard, perhaps that is the way her “discovery” went but does not work for a book structure. In summary: find a few sober tools that work for you specifically, probably nothing too extreme.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the first book, Mrs. D is Going Without
Reviewed in Canada on 4 May 2022
While the style of the first book -- a day-by-day account of a woman who is facing life without alcohol -- worked (and I recommend that book if you are going through it yourself, it's an excellent recapturing of all of the feelings), this one doesn't. In the first book, the author went back to her blog and journal to recount the story afterwards. In this one, she obviously knew she would write a book and it's like a day-to-day, if not hour-to-hour, diary of "I tried this. This is how I felt. I didn't like it. Tomorrow I will try that." Day 2: "Tried that. This is how I felt. I liked it. Will keep doing that." It was boring.

Thank you Lotta, this book really helped me let go of setting perfectionist wellness goals that were impossible to meet and constantly left me feeling disappointed in myself. Your book helped me see the wellness journey as an adventure, and gave me the freedom to pick and choose what works for me. Also loved that you described beyond inital roller coaster highs and lows journey of giving up alcohol, through to the part when the gloss has worn off. Very practical and very helpful. Thanks for being so authentically you and sharing your journey.
