The Delta Paperback – 29 Sept. 2011

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 835 ratings

After a failed assassination attempt on the president of Zimbabwe, ex-soldier turned mercenary Sonja Kurtz is on the run. She heads for her only place of refuge, the Okavango Delta in the heart of Botswana. She's keen to forget her warrior lifestyle - it's time for an easy life.

But then Sonja discovers that the Delta is on the brink of destruction. She is recruited as an 'eco-commando' in a bid to halt a project that would destroy the Delta's fragile network of swamps and waterways. Soon she finds herself caught in a deadly web of intrigue involving her ex-lover Sterling, the handsome Martin Steele - her mercenary commander, and a TV heartthrob and wildlife documentary presenter 'Coyote' Sam Chapman who blunders out of the bush in a reality show gone wrong.

Instead of escaping her violent past, Sonja is now surrounded by men who are relying on her killer instincts to save the day. Where she came to find peace, she finds war... and it is not just the survival of the Delta that is at stake.

Sonya Kurtz is a woman mercenary working in Africa. She is beautiful, honest, deadly and a sympathetic but somewhat tormented superhero - kind of a female Jack Reacher but with angst. This is a story of action, intrigue and war during which Sonya becomes reconciled to her estranged father and her illegitimate and resentful daughter.
Tony Park is clearly a born storyteller. His settings are vivid and his characters (even minor ones) come alive and develop in a satisfying way. The plot of this book is well constructed and moves along at a ripping pace with surprises in every chapter.
It's a pity that the Kindle version was so poorly formatted with missing paragraph and section breaks all through the book. It took some getting used to jumping between completely different scenes without warning. GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER AMAZON!
In spite of this annoyance I gave this novel five stars as I did not think such a talented author should be penalised because of a dilatory proof reader failing to do their job.

I really liked this book, so well written with great descriptions of people, places and of course action.
Reminds me of Wilber Smith books with all of the African ways of life that go on there. I will be looking for another Tony Park book now.

Thought it might be like Wilbur Smith not a bit very slow as it jumps from one year to the next and confusing.

I was looking for a book to read and one of my friends from South Africa suggested I try a Tony Park book.
I had a look at a few of his books and read the reviews etc, and I settled on this one as I know the area fairly well... I wasn't disappointed!!
His descriptions are fantastic, and his knowledge is very good, I really enjoyed the story line too, perhaps those who have commented on it being too far fetched (bearing in mind it is a fictional story!) believe women are only capable of sitting at a desk or baking cakes... ;)
Thank you Mr Park for writing this book... My only problem now is which book to choose next!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A true Tony Park novel
Reviewed in the United States on 6 January 2012
For those of you who have read Tony Park before, this book is another great story. As other reviews have said, it's obvious that he loves Africa and has a great knowledge of it's people and environment, and that shines through.

He also knows how to write an exciting story, with characters you connect with and a splash of edgy romance. Saying that, there is always a scene or two where you think 'this would never happen' or 'there is no way they'd survive this situation', but he's such a great story teller that you are willing to overlook it.

    A great summer read.

    THE DELTA
    Sonja Kurtz series Book One

    TONY PARK

    Review by Author Roy Murry

THE DELTA is the second novel I have read by Mr. Park. The first is SAFARI. Both give a vivid background of Africa's wildlife, countries' topographies, and their people.

Sonja, a well-trained mercenary, is manipulated into a predicament by her boss and ex-lover. She has to do the unpredictable for millions, which will start a war. Will this event save the environment or make the rich richer plays a significant role in her decision?

The characters play an intriguing role that leads to compelling subplots that are the background of Sonja's main event. Unfortunately, these stories slowed down getting to the main event.

THE DELTA is a long read but worth the wait for the explosive and unconventional ending. The story is well written, as are all of Mr. Park’s novels.
