The inspiring memoir of the remarkable Jackie Moggridge: ATA girl, Spitfire expert and pioneer.
'We had returned to a different world. We had taken off in peace at nine-thirty and landed in war at noon.'

Jackie Moggridge was just nineteen when World War Two broke out. Determined to do her bit, she joined the Air Transport Auxiliary. Ferrying aircraft from factory to frontline was dangerous work, but there was also fun, friendship and even love in the air. At last the world was opening up to women... or at least it seemed to be.

From her first flight at fifteen to smuggling Spitfires into Burma, Jackie describes the trials and tribulations, successes and frustrations of her life in the sky.

This autobiography combines an extraordinary story - Jackie Moggridge was born in interesting times - with a compellingly readable style. A powerful and wilful personality enabled her to achieve far more than women were ever expected to achieve in the early twentieth century. She became a pilot as a girl in South Africa, came to Britain and eventually (after much opposition) got a job with the ATA as a ferry pilot. This book sticks to her life as a flyer and doesn't try to be a complete autobiography makes it more focused and interesting. There are personal memories too but they are often tied in with descriptions of the remarkable places she saw and the flights and aircraft she loved so deeply. An intelligent woman with a real story to tell and a fascinating read for younger women to realise just how far we have progressed as a sex. The deep-rooted prejudice against skilled working women in the 1940's seems quite ridiculous now and women like JM showed men what females were capable of. A very educational and enjoyable book.

This was a great read. If you thought women just quad up for food with their ration book, please read this book to find out how courageous some of these women were.

Reading this book really details a woman's lot before and during the last war. Over my lifetime - I'm 73 - I have seen immense changes in how we, as men and as women are and how we all seemed to fit into a rigid machine of life. Back then, in the 30s life was gradual and any changes were almost imperceptible, but once women were involved in the war (and since of course) a new era had begun.

Jackie Moggridge's book shows what was (just) possible when you are as determined as she was. Her story is amazing, a real inspiration to anyone - female or male - to turn a desire (passion) into reality. All she wanted was to fly and what she achieved should never be forgotten. OK so we are told that the RAF was a huge power during the war and that 'The Few' did an amazing, almost impossible job. But lets not forget that women like Jackie, serving in the Air Transport Auxiliary, delivering planes to where they are needed, were essential too.

Her story is simply brilliant. What she did, how she did it and the years and changes she covered is all written down to inspire, to inform and yes, to entertain too. A brilliant book.

If you are a pilot or just fascinated by flying this is a great read. A lady that flew many types of aircraft in the early days against all odds and by ‘seat of the pants’ Recommend it. 👍

Star of 'Absolute Heaven', a video about Jackie flying with Caroline Grace in her 2-seater Spitfire ML407, this highly entertaining book about Jackie's life with the ATA, delivering a variety of aircraft to RAF stations round the UK and then later ferrying Spitfires to Burma in the '50's, is a fascinating read about someone who spent her life fulfilling her childhood ambition to become a commercial pilot. An absorbing read full of lots of details about flying these aircraft and the trials and tribulation involved in getting the job done.

Aged 17, Jackie Sorour was the first woman to make a parachute-jump in Africa. Coming to Britain to improve her flying skills, she delivered more than 400 Spitfires for the RAF. In 1994 she was reunited with one she'd delivered fifty years earlier, taking the controls for part of a re-run of her original flight. 10 years later, her daughter scattered he mother's ashes from the same Spitfire as it flew over the countryside her mother had criss-crossed so many times during the war. An exceptional pilot and a very brave lady.

A fascinating story, but misses out big chunks of Jackie's life after the war, while covering other parts to excessive length. It says almost nothing about her long suffering husband and family and because of these omissions, falls short of being the excellent biography that it could have been.

The writing style is rather clumsy in places, with adjectives piled carelessly together and in some instances incorrectly. It needed a good editor! In spite of these shortcomings it gives an excellent insight into a little known facet of the Second World War and is worth reading for that

A fascinating history of one woman's experiences during the war and her efforts to get recognition for her accomplishments and experience after the war, when women traditionally could not expect equality with men in their same field of accomplishment.
