From the #1

Welcome to the most intriguing mystery you'll read this year.

Welcome to Midnight, Texas.

At Midnight's local pawnshop, weapons are flying off the shelves-only to be used in sudden and dramatic suicides right at the main crossroads in town.

Who better to figure out why blood is being spilled than the vampire Lemuel, who, while translating mysterious texts, discovers what makes Midnight the town it is. There's a reason why witches and werewolves, killers and psychics, have been drawn to this place.

And now they must come together to stop the bloodshed in the heart of Midnight. For if all hell breaks loose - which just might happen - it will put the secretive town on the map, where no one wants it to be . . .

Charlaine Harris was born in Tunica, Mississippi, and raised in the Mississippi River Delta area in the middle of a cotton field. Though her early works consisted largely of poems about ghosts and, later, teenage angst, she wrote plays when she attended Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee and started writing novels a few years later.

After publishing two stand-alone mysteries, Harris launched a light-hearted mystery series 'starring' Georgia librarian Aurora Teagarden. The first of the eight books, Real Murders, was shortlisted for Best Novel in the 1990 Agatha Awards. In 1996, she released the first of the much darker Shakespeare mysteries, featuring the amateur sleuth Lily Bard, a karate student who makes her living cleaning houses.

Charlaine Harris then wrote the first of her Southern vampire mysteries starring Sookie Stackhouse, the quirky, telepathic waitress who works in a bar in the fictional Northern Louisiana town of Bon Temps. Dead Until Dark won the Anthony Award for Best Paperback Mystery. It also won Harris a whole new fan club of devoted readers and pushed her into the bestseller lists. The Sookie Stackhouse series, in which Sookie has to deal with vampires, werecreatures and other supernatural folk - not to mention her own complicated love life - was also instrumental in creating the urban fantasy genre.

Sookie Stackhouse also enchanted Alan Ball, creator of the smash TV show Six Feet Under, who took an option and wrote and directed the pilot episode for True Blood himself. It was an instant hit when it premiered in the US, and that success was repeated when it was first aired in Britain last year. The second season of TRUE BLOOD will start this spring.

Harris's newest series features Harper Connelly, a young woman who, after being struck by lightning, finds herself able to locate the bodies of the dead and to determine the cause of their death. There are four Harper titles (Grave Sight, Grave Surprise, An Ice Cold Grave and Grave Secret).

Charlaine Harris is a member of the Mystery Writers of America and the American Crime Writers League. She is a member of the board of Sisters in Crime, and alternates with Joan Hess as president of the Arkansas Mystery Writers Alliance. She is married, the mother of three, and lives in a small town in Southern Arkansas. When she is not writing her own books, she reads omnivorously!

Much better then I expected, read the first book and just had to read the second and then the third, liked the residents of Midnight, more and more, also liked finding out about them slowly, or though the climax was a bit of an anticlimax! Are there going to be more Midnight books, do .hope so as I feel they have more to say. And hopefully more people coming to Midnight to mix it up a bit. But do love the residents, and their back stories, so hopefully more stories?

I'm so sad that this series is over! I've really enjoyed getting to know the characters of Midnight, Texas and I'm a little disappointed but also hopeful that I might hear from them again!
What a hodgepodge bunch they are but so brilliant at the same time! In Midnight Crossroad and Day Shift the small group of townsfolk had to face several adversaries but none as formidable as the one they face in Night Shift. Suicides keep happening on the crossroads in Midnight, blood is being spilled and Lemuel the vampire is still desperately trying to translate the ancient texts which he found in the pawnshop. He's sure that they will give a reason for the unexplained deaths. But if it's what he suspects, they might just be running out of time. There's a ritual needed and even Mr Snuggly is going to have his part to play.

This whole series has been start to finish brilliant. I really love these characters and I had forgotten what a wonderful writer Charlaine Harris is, her books are such easy, delicious reads with characters you really can't help loving. I'll definitely be checking out the tv series when I get back to the UK as well!

I really enjoyed this final book in this trilogy. It was a fairly light series - nothing too serious and nothing too taxing, but a very enjoyable read.

In this final book, the residents of Midnight have a major problem to solve, but only when they all work together can it be resolved. Most of the resolution relies on Lemuel and Fiji - him for his books and her for her magic!

Many secrets in this book are revealed, emotions are high, people do the unexpected and relationships are made even stronger for some! A fun read and recommended!

I read the first one in this series and couldn't put it down so I brought the second and third books. This third one in the series is a little far fetched however story wise but I still enjoyed the story and seeing what happened. I felt like I knew the characters and wanted to see what happened. Wish there were more in the series! I liked the author's Sookie Stackhouse books so wanted to try one of her other series and glad I did. I like Charlaine's writing style.

I'm greatly enamoured of Charlaine Harris' new series and this book is a wonderful addition to this developing canon. Characters to adore and a dark, whimsical universe that her other books have only hinted at, this book marks a maturing progression to already vastly entertaining ouevre. Also -- as indigenous person I recognize it's hard for settlers to get indigeneity right -- and she did a good job with the character of Sylvester, and I'm grateful for that. Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Una conclusione inconcludente
Reviewed in Italy on 29 August 2017
