Haiku poems about the natural world and the seasons are well known, but many poets have used the genre to capture the evocations of love. Combining elegant and restrained haiku with lively senryu poems, all aspects of romantic love are explored here with humour, satire, wit and compassion. Poems by both men and women from the 1600s to the present day are beautifully illustrated with images from the unrivalled collection of Japanese paintings and prints in the British Museum. From the tender and the melancholy to the witty and the ribald, the poems and images in Haiku: Love comment on the most universal of human emotions.

How customer reviews and ratings work
Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 December 2013Alan Cummings is an unparalleled genius in his field, he has compiled a collection of highly arousing haiku, some of which I am sure he penned himself and cheekily inserted. Nice one, he truly did everything in his par to make this super extra-excellent book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful and enjoyable book on love using the Japanese haiku poetic form.
First off, this is a HAIKU POETRY BOOK NOT A NOVEL, which means the above requested comments just do not apply. I enjoy reading several kinds of poetry but my two favorite forms are haiku and senryu. When I saw this beautifully illustrated 96 page hardback cover book (Haiku Love edited by Alan Cummings) I immediately purchased it on Amazon for a bargain price.
This fantastic book focuses on haiku poetry (and Senryu poetry) that relates to the many facets of love. There is an interesting introduction explaining the Japanese haiku and senryu development. This volume is organized into the three states of life: Youth, Middle age and Old age. There is also biographical notes, a further reading section, sources of translations and credits. The thing which makes this book unique is the beautiful Japanese full color historical illustrations along with the poems on each page.
The following are examples of a poem from each of the cycle of life (Youth, Middle age and old age). The beginning “Youth” section begins with a poem from Boncho: “So varied and ever-changing love.” One of the beautiful poems of the middle age section is as follows: “Burning mosquitos in the concubine’s bedchamber erotic whispers” by Kikaku. This is one of the poems in the old age section. “With few words husband and wife part – autumn nightfall” by Sugita Hisajo.
If you love haiku and senryu poems which includes beautiful color Japanese illustrations this book is for you.
Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Zen Poetry Moments: Haiku and Senryu for special occasions).
