- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 August 2017This is surely one of the best, or THE best, of the "Past & Present" series on Scotland's railways. As usual, the "Past" pictures are far better; remember, most of the "present" shots are missing a railway or a station. The quality of the older shots is superb. Often better than the newer images, they are clear and sharp, also very well captioned. There is a colour section in the middle but many of these are less impressive than the b&w stuff, with the exception of a rare colour shot of a pair of green Claytons at Craigenhill; neither is on fire, even more unusual. The book covers a wide geographic area and makes a great reference book; it would be equally at-home on the coffee table, to be browsed at random. Previous railway knowledge is not really necessary, anyone would enjoy just "looking at the pictures". High quality, well researched and an easy five stars.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 December 2016Using the usual Past and Present format of placing modern photographs of locations alongside older, mainly 1960's, ones of the same spots, the book covers the area of Scotland's rail network north and west of Glasgow. All the locations are north of the Clyde, although, slightly oddly, it also takes in the Queen St Low Level line out as far as Airdrie. The Trossachs are included, but nothing east of Callander, and there is nothing north of Mallaig, so the Kyle line is not included. For those who knew Scotland's railways as they used to be, and even for those of us who didn't, there are some fascinating comparisons here.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 April 2018Great book
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 December 2014Book in very good condition and very interesting to read with photos of my local area.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 December 2012a comprehensive look at what was there in times past. linked to similar views of today. In some respects rather sad.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 November 2012What a plesant change to have a railway book full of place illustrations, rather than yet another cascade of locomotive pictures. Though 'now' is of course a decade ago! My only complaint is that although it does cover the most westerly point on the rail network (Arisaig, rather than Mallaig as claimed in the book), it most certainly does not cover the north. Frankly Strathclyde & Lochaber would be a more accurate title.
However a very enjoyable & informative read that I shall look at more than once.
